Primrose owes its early prosperity to geography. When the Prince of Wales Road was completed from Orangeville to Primrose in 1860, the village instantly became a commercial hub for the surrounding Mulmur countryside. The first settler, Colwell Graham — an Irishman who arrived around 1850 — cleared the land and built a home for his family of eight. By 1871, the village population had grown to approximately 350, making it one of the most significant settlements in the township.
The name "Primrose" is believed to derive from Primrose Hill in London, England, a connection reinforced by the wildflowers that bloomed along the roadsides and fields of the area. The Post Office was opened on October 1, 1860 by C. McCutcheon, and James Dodds — who became both Postmaster and Justice of the Peace — ran the community's general store and was a devoted member of the Whitfield Presbyterian Church.
