At its peak the village boasted a tavern known as "The Blue Jay," the Hawkins brothers' sawmill, Richard Holt's shingle mill, Samuel Bowers' blacksmith shop, and the remarkable "Old Mr. Grashy" — a dentist who also dug wells. The Orange Hall, built in 1898, still stands today as a commercial store.
Violet Hill had the most organized civil society of any Mulmur sub-community. The Good Templars (Men's Temperance Lodge), the Chosen Friends (a co-ed insurance society for both men and women), and the Grangers (a co-operative purchasing society whose members took turns bringing supplies from the railway station) all met in the Templar Hall on the Aberdeen farm. The village also maintained a well-stocked community library with a 25-cent membership fee — a remarkable amenity for a rural hamlet of its era. Long-time descendants of the Cotton, Newton, and Parson families still farm their original land today.
On the 5th Line of Mulmur, the Robinson family cemetery holds a special place in the township's history. Grandfather Robinson was the first burial in 1854.
