Discover Violet Hill, Mulmur Real Estate

Perched along Highway 89 at the border of Mulmur and Mono townships, Violet Hill is one of Dufferin County's most storied rural communities. Named by its first Postmistress for the violet wildflowers blooming on the surrounding hills, this Niagara Escarpment village blends deep pioneer heritage with a vibrant present-day community spirit.

A Village Named by a Woman

Violet Hill's story begins in 1836 with the arrival of the Bowers, Swansey, Campbell, Newton, and Aberdeen families. What makes it unique among all Mulmur sub-communities is its name: in 1897, Mrs. Robinson, the first Postmistress, named the village after the violet wildflowers she saw blooming on the hills surrounding her home on the 4th Line — the only Mulmur community named by a woman. At its peak the village boasted a tavern known as "The Blue Jay," the Hawkins brothers' sawmill, Richard Holt's shingle mill, Samuel Bowers' blacksmith shop, and the remarkable "Old Mr. Grashy" — a dentist who also dug wells. The Orange Hall, built in 1898, still stands today as a commercial store.

Three Community Societies & a Library

Violet Hill had the most organized civil society of any Mulmur sub-community. The Good Templars (Men's Temperance Lodge), the Chosen Friends (a co-ed insurance society for both men and women), and the Grangers (a co-operative purchasing society whose members took turns bringing supplies from the railway station) all met in the Templar Hall on the Aberdeen farm. The village also maintained a well-stocked community library with a 25-cent membership fee — a remarkable amenity for a rural hamlet of its era. Long-time descendants of the Cotton, Newton, and Parson families still farm their original land today.

The Mulmur Church Cemetery

On the 5th Line of Mulmur, the Robinson family cemetery holds a special place in the township's history. Grandfather Robinson was the first burial in 1854. Neglected for decades, the cemetery was restored in 1937 by a community committee that included the Violet Hill Women's Institute — one of the earliest recorded heritage preservation efforts in Mulmur. A stone gateway was built, the grounds were cleared, and an endowment fund was established to provide perpetual care. The Methodist Church built in 1872 on the Nicholas Parson farm at the western edge of the village was eventually taken down, and its materials were used to build a small storage shed — a fitting echo of the cross-community material reuse that characterizes so much of Mulmur's pioneer spirit.

Nature, Recreation & Escarpment Living

Violet Hill sits at the gateway to some of Dufferin County's finest outdoor recreation. The Hockley Valley Provincial Nature Reserve is just 3.5 km away, offering 13 km of hiking trails through Carolinian forest and the Nottawasaga River headwaters. The nearby Hockley Valley Resort provides year-round activities including skiing, golf, and spa services. The Bruce Trail passes through the area along the Niagara Escarpment UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, and the Dufferin County Forest trail network is within easy reach. For buyers seeking a four-season lifestyle property on the Escarpment, Violet Hill offers one of the most accessible and scenic settings in all of Mulmur Township.
