A Village Unlike Any Other

Ruskview holds a unique distinction in Ontario pioneer history: unlike virtually every other settlement of its era, it was established without a mill site or a crossroads to attract passing trade. When Joseph Lennox secured his crown land grant in 1848 on Lot 29, Concession 4, he chose the spot for the land itself — and for the extraordinary view from the bluff above the Pine River Valley. That same vista, sweeping across the Mulmur hills, continues to draw buyers to the area today.

The village grew slowly, anchored by a post office and general store built by Robert Reid in 1880. Reid became the first official Postmaster, and the community was formally named Ruskview in honour of William Rusk (1803–1892), an early settler whose farm stood directly across from the store. The name combines the Rusk family legacy with the spectacular "view" that defines the community's character.

The Naming Tangle & Seymour Newell

Ruskview's path to its name is one of the more colourful stories in Mulmur's history. The community was originally known as Black Bank — a name applied as a practical joke by Henry Allen's friends in Banda, who filled in the post office application with the name of an Irish town Allen disliked. When a subsequent postmaster relocated the post office to a nearby village called "Britannia," he took the Black Bank name with him, leaving the original settlement without either a post office or an identity.

Residents petitioned for a new post office and chose the name Ruskview. During the Black Bank era, mail was delivered by Seymour Newell, aged 15, who carried letters between Black Bank and Honeywood — four miles each way, twice a week — either on foot or on horseback. His dedication to the community's postal connection is one of the most vivid human stories in Mulmur's recorded history.

Robert Reid's General Store

The sole surviving structure from the original village is Robert Reid's general store, built in 1880 at the corner of the 2nd Line and the 25th Sideroad. Now a private residence, it stands as a tangible link to the community's founding era. A heritage sign at the site provides a brief history of the village for visitors who make the drive to the bluff. The store and post office were later sold to Thomas Farley, and a second blacksmith shop opened near the spring, operated by Robert Rina. The Lennox family's land ownership continued into the third generation, and many Rusk grandchildren settled throughout the surrounding area.

Nature, Trails & Outdoor Living

Ruskview's position on the Pine River Valley bluff places it at the heart of some of Mulmur's finest natural landscapes. The Pine River & Bruce Trail Loop — a 4.5-mile moderately challenging trail — winds through the valley below, offering hiking, birding, and seasonal wildlife viewing. The Niagara Escarpment UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve frames the broader landscape, while the Mansfield Ski Club and the Mansfield Outdoor Centre (34 km of groomed cross-country ski trails, mountain biking, and snowshoeing) are approximately 10 km to the southwest. The Dufferin County Forest provides additional year-round trail access throughout the region.
